Prom Closet Ministry

Coordinator: Dawn Gabauer

Thank you for visiting our Prom Closet Ministry page!

Most high school young ladies dream about finding that perfect dress for prom that sets off their beauty and personality... but looking and feeling beautiful for that special night at prom usually comes with a rather hefty price tag that some families simply cannot afford, leaving many unable to attend. Our young men sometimes fall into the same category as suits and tuxes are expensive too. We hope to change that! With the help of a very generous church family and our community at large, many of those young men and women may now have the opportunity to experience their fairy tale dreams with an exquisite dress or ensemble at no cost to their family.

Our Cameron UMC Prom Closet Ministry was founded in 2020. Donated clothing and accessories will serve our high school youth in need. Accessories such as jewelry, shoes, handbags, wraps, ties, and cumber buns will complete their look.

FAQs:

Who is this for?
Our CUMC Prom Closet is open to all high school students! Your child does not need to attend CHS to receive from our Prom Closet. We hope to serve young adults from our own community as well as any others that need assistance.
Our only requirement is that each youth recipient be present to select his/her attire and accessories.

Why was the Cameron UMC Prom Closet created?
The Cameron UMC Prom Closet was created to provide high school youth with a unique and exciting prom shopping experience! The Cameron UMC is dedicated to helping these deserving young men and women shine their brightest and look their absolute best for prom! We can’t wait to see the look on their faces when they find that perfect dress or suit. That is what it is all about!

How does it work?
The Cameron UMC will collect dresses, suits along with accessories throughout the year. Young men and women can call (816) 632-3461 after January 1st to make an appointment to shop. Once an individual has selected their attire, they can try it on in a dressing room. They will then be able to visit the boutique to look for accessories to pair with their attire.

Where are the items from?
Items are donated from community members, businesses, organizations, high school alumni and local groups. We are always welcoming suits, tuxedos, dresses, shoes, wraps, jewelry, handbags, and other accessories for this annual event. Our goal is to provide an abundance of new *donated* items to our collection each year.

How many do you hope to serve?
We hope to provide a dress for every young person that is in need. We count on substantial donations from church and community members, local groups, corporations, and businesses, therefor items will vary each year.

Where do I go to donate or receive?
Donations are accepted at the church office at 201 N Pine Street, Cameron, MO 64429; Tuesday-Friday from 8:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-4:30p.m. Donations may also be dropped off in the Cameron UMC office, Sunday mornings from 9:00am-11:00a.m. Online giving is also available through our website at www.cameronumc.org.

The Cameron UMC Prom Closet is conveniently located in the heart of Cameron. Dates will be set in early 2022 for shopping appointments.

What can I do to help?

Go through your closets today!
The Cameron P
rom Closet needs your donations to make this a reality for our young men and women. Gently used prom dresses or other elegant dresses, outfits, suits, tuxedos, shoes, purses, wraps, jewelry and other accessories can all be donated to the Cameron UMC Prom Closet.

Consider a monetary donation!
We invite individuals and organizations alike to make monetary donations to support this ministry and cause. Our Prom Closet Ministry Team "Shoppers" will be tasked to find bargain deals at local clothing and shoe stores.

Put your sewing skills to work!
Those with sewing skills will be in demand to assist with fittings and/or alterations to ensure a perfect fit. All of our staff members and those who will help serve with alterations are Safe Sanctuary Certified and we respect each person’s personal privacy.
